In the United States Acme threads are probably the most commonly used thread profile when designing a lead screw for power transmission or linear motion (the European equivalent is the Trapezoidal thread profile). The Acme thread makes a very robust actuation screw that packs a great deal of dynamic and static capacity into a power transmission package. This exceptional capability does come at a price in its efficiency with Acme thread screws being approximately 30-40% efficient. PST does offer Acme threaded lead screw and nut assemblies that are manufactured using proprietary processes wherein the efficiencies are typically improved by 10-15 percentage points or more. Stub Acme Lead ScrewsThe Stub Acme thread profile is a variant of the Acme thread profile and is used in situations where a coarse pitch, shallow thread is needed for power transmission or linear motion but there are mechanical or metallurgical design limitations. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard which PST uses for design and manufacture of Stub Acme thread is ASME/ANSI B1.8-1988. The standard covers:
